"This isn't how I learned math!" No its not! Many things in education are not just like you did / learned them. Education is a science and over the years many improvements have been made. Imagine if we were still driving the Model T? Or, all food was still cooked over a fire? Aren't you glad we have easier and more efficient ways to travel and cook? I will teach your child "traditional methods" to solve math problems. However, your child will learn newer methods that are well-researched "best practices" that have been identified to help students gain the foundation and flexible math thinking to move onto higher level math. I am a firm believer that math can be solved in different ways as long as the basic thinking is there because not all children learn the same way. I will help your child unlock their pathway to higher math by giving them the knowledge of different strategies so they can choose the solution that works best for them!
I like my 4th graders to know their basic multiplication facts in a fluent manner (instant recall) up to 12 x 12 by Thanksgiving break. This is a foundational skill and sets the tone of how well your child will be able to be successful in learning math this year. In class I will provide opportunities to become more fluent with multiplication however the student's ability to have parental support and time at home to learn their facts will be required. Part of your child's homework will be to practice their math facts every week. I will be giving multiplication quizzes frequently at the beginning of the year to see your child's progression.
Perseverance and Grit are two qualities that all mathematicians need. Your child will be solving multi-operation / multi-step word problems. Your child will learn important critical thinking skills that will enable them to solve any type of math problem! I will help your child build his or her stamina for math and problem solving this year.
